Men come in fourth, women finish 10th at NEWMAC Championships

BOSTON—The Babson College men had five runners finish in the top 40 and came in fourth overall with 127 points, while the women recorded two personal-best times and placed 10th with 271 points at the 2015 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Sunday at Franklin Park.

MIT, which is ranked 10th nationally, repeated as champions in the men’s race, followed by second-place WPI and third-place Coast Guard. The Engineers, who were ranked third in the latest Division III women’s poll, also repeated as team champions, while Wellesley and WPI came in second and third, respectively.

First-year Matthew Dynan (Reading, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Beaver men, coming in 25th with a time of 27:20. ClassmateRyan Vandervalk (Glen Rock, N.J.) finished 26th with a time of 27:25, while fellow first-year Walker Odell (Santa Barbara, Calif.) finished the 8k course in 27:41 to place 34th overall. Sophomore Scott Atwood (West Newbury, Mass.) posted a time of 27:52 to come in 37th and classmate Jonathan Miller (Westford, Mass.) placed 39th with a time of 27:59.

First-year Jake Fishkin (Hagerstown, Md.) recorded a time of 28:45 to place 52nd, classmate Austin Henry (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) finished 59th with a time of 29:01 and sophomore Ryan Colaco (Danville, Calif.) produced a 64th-place effort with a time of 29:23. First-year Edward Tomasso (Farmington, Conn.) posted a time of 29:39, sophomore Jonathan Martin (Valrico, Fla.) finished in 31:08 and senior Edgar Ocana (Chelsea, Mass.) crossed the finish line in a time of 31:16. Junior Trevor Lomba(Dartmouth, Mass.) came in with a time of 32:41 in his NEWMAC Championship debut.

In the women’s half of the meet, first-year Chaela Hood (Plymouth, Mass.) , cut 36 seconds off her previous best time and finished 35th overall with a time of 19:40 on the 5k course. Sophomore Melanie Plattner (Fort Lee, N.J.) finished 49th with a time of 20:12, while junior Heather Murphy (Perrineville, N.J.) made her conference meet debut with a time of 21:26 for the Beavers.

Senior Katie Donovan (Darien, Conn.) recorded a new personal-best time of 21:52, and first-year My-Linh DeBonis (Framingham, Mass.) crossed the finish line in a time of 22:41. Classmate Emily MacDonald (East Sandwich, Mass.) posted a time of 23:15, while junior Amy Warner (Rockland, Mass.) ran a time of 26:02.
